In this post Charlottized world of disavow all things associated with any sort of bigotry related to our past, it’s absolutely shocking to witness the lengths Leftists will go to in order to “prove” their point, and in some cases it’s quite hilarious as well!
Pulling down statutes and beating the shit out of their own feet by kicking lifeless stone and metal seems to be the latest craze amongst young lefty’s.
Monuments dedicated to historical figures of the Slave era are now all at risk of being destroyed by fanatical liberals who want nothing more than to stick it to the right in any way imaginable to empower their sense of social justice, even if that means breaking their feet and toes in the process.
Picture’s show people kicking Confederate statue after it was toppled by protesters in Durham, North Carolina, where the monument had stood since 1924.
On The Chopping Block…
What if we were to extend the track of logic the left has laid just out a little further, what other historical icons could the left consider unsuitable for us to have monumentalized as statues?
Here is a short list of Famous American Icons in which the left should also be willing to destroy statues of, if they are to be true to their politics…
Washington was the owner of many slaves. Of the 317 enslaved people living at Mount Vernon in 1799, about half were personally owned by George Washington himself.
During a debate with Sen. Stephen Douglas, Lincoln stated to a crowd:
“I am not, nor ever have been, in favor of bringing about in any way the social and political equality of the white and black races … I am not nor ever have been in favor of making voters or jurors of Negroes, nor of qualifying them to hold office, nor to intermarry with white people; and I will say in addition to this that there is a physical difference between the white and black races which I believe will forever forbid the two races from living together on terms of social and political equality. And inasmuch as they cannot so live, while they do remain together there must be a position of superior and inferior, and I as much as any other man am in favor of having the superior position assigned to the white race.”
Jefferson owned hundreds of African-American slaves, and his position on slavery has been s debated by biographers and researchers. In 1767 at age 21, Jefferson inherited 5,000 acres of land and 52 slaves by his father’s will. In 1773 Jefferson received two plantations and 135 slaves. By 1776, Jefferson was one of the largest planters in Virginia.
Martin Luther King Jr.
MLK Jr. once answered a question from a boy who was questioning his sexuality.
According to a transcript by Stanford University, the young man asked:
“I am a boy, but I feel about boys the way I ought to feel about girls. I don’t want my parents to know about me. What can I do? Is there any place where I can go for help?”
King responded: “Your problem is not at all an uncommon one. However, it does require careful attention. The type of feeling that you have toward boys is probably not an innate tendency, but something that has been culturally acquired. Your reasons for adopting this habit have now been consciously suppressed or unconsciously repressed. Therefore, it is necessary to deal with this problem by getting back to some of the experiences and circumstances that lead to the habit.”
“In order to do this I would suggest that you see a good psychiatrist who can assist you in bringing to the forefront of conscience all of those experiences and circumstances that lead to the habit. You are already on the right road toward a solution, since you honestly recognise the problem and have a desire to solve it.” Clearly King viewed homosexuality as a psychological condition that is best treated with therapy. A bigoted perspective by today’s measures.
Here is a Canadian example just for good measure 😉
Sir John A. Macdonald
(1st Prime Minister of Canada)
On First Nations Integration…
“When the school is on the reserve, the child lives with its parents, who are savages, and though he may learn to read and write, his habits and training mode of thought are Indian. He is simply a savage who can read and write. It has been strongly impressed upon myself, as head of the Department, that Indian children should be withdrawn as much as possible from the parental influence, and the only way to do that would be to put them in central training industrial schools where they will acquire the habits and modes of thought of white men.”
What the left fails to acknowledge, is that morality is determined by the culture of the present times, and holding individuals of the past to today moral standards is both illogical and completely ignorant.
Noam to the Rescue!
If I am to have any hopes of getting through to a liberal reader out there, perhaps a quote from Noam Chomski will serve as a an affective tool…
“Slavery for example, or other forms of tyranny, are inherently monstrous but the individuals participating in them could be the nicest guys you can imagine – benevolent, friendly, nice to their children, even nice to their slaves…”
What old Chomsky means here, is that it’s wise to separate the individual from the societal norms of the times when making a judgement of their character; we should not judge a persons entire character and legacy by the moral standards of OUR times, we should judge them in relation to their respective era much like we do athletes and scientists. Imagine judging a scientist work from the 1700’s by today’s standards; do you think his work would impress the scientific community of today? No, of course not. His failure to impress our current scientific minds would not be due to his lack of intelligence, it would be because we have progressed far beyond what society could allow him to discover in his respective era. The same logic can be applied to morality and slavery; in the slave-owning era, people owned slaves, both “good” and “bad”, where now days you would be thrown in jail for owning a slave in western society and no redeeming quality could save you from being viewed as a monster.
A man can only be judged relative to the times in which he lives. Rather than erase history, it is better to learn from it. Rather than demonized our past, it is better to appreciate the progression of our society.
Hopefully the left will grow up and spare and us the destruction of our historical monuments, and as well, themselves a trip to the hospital! But I won’t be holding my breath anytime soon!
